*Timing depends on the particular instrument, exchange rules and applicable seasonal schedule.

Intraday Trading Timings

Intraday trading timings for the regular equity market are generally 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM IST. Trades opened for intraday purposes must be squared off according to the broker’s applicable policies and cut-off times, which can differ from the exchange closing time.

The first few minutes after the market opens can experience high volatility because overnight global developments, institutional orders and news are reflected in prices. Similarly, the final part of the session can become active as traders adjust positions before the close.

The NSE equity market also has a pre-open session beginning at 9:00 AM, while normal trading begins at 9:15 AM.

F&O Market Timings

F&O Market Timings

The F&O market timings on NSE for equity derivatives are generally 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM. NSE’s current market-timing information lists the normal equity derivatives session as 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM, with trade modification available until 4:15 PM.

The derivatives segment includes instruments such as index futures, index options, stock futures and stock options. NSE also provides a pre-open session for eligible equity derivatives from 9:00 AM to 9:15 AM.

NSE Derivatives Timing

NSE Derivatives Activity Timing
Equity derivatives pre-open 9:00 AM–9:15 AM
Normal F&O trading 9:15 AM–3:30 PM
Trade modification end time 4:15 PM

These timings are exchange-level timings; individual brokers may impose earlier square-off or order-related cut-offs.

Currency Market Timing India

The currency market timing India schedule is different from equity trading. NSE currently lists currency futures and options such as USDINR, EURINR, GBPINR and JPYINR with normal trading from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Cross-currency contracts can have a later closing time.

Currency derivatives are particularly sensitive to domestic economic announcements, central-bank decisions, interest-rate expectations and global currency movements.

For traders, this means the opening and closing periods should not be treated exactly like equity-market sessions.

Commodity Market Timings

Commodity market timings are considerably longer than equity-market hours. On MCX, the normal session currently starts at 9:00 AM. Internationally referenceable non-agricultural commodities can trade until 11:30 PM, or 11:55 PM depending on the US daylight-saving period. Internationally referenceable agricultural commodities generally trade until 9:00 PM, while other agricultural commodities can trade until 5:00 PM.

Commodity Category Start Closing Time
Non-agricultural / internationally linked 9:00 AM 11:30 PM / 11:55 PM
Internationally referenceable agricultural 9:00 AM 9:00 PM
Other agricultural commodities 9:00 AM 5:00 PM

The extended commodity session allows Indian traders to respond to movements in international commodity markets. However, longer hours can also mean that traders need to monitor positions and margins for a much larger portion of the day.

Best Time to Trade Different Segments

There is no universally “best” trading time. The ideal period depends on the instrument, strategy, liquidity and volatility.

For equity and F&O traders, the opening period can offer significant price movement, while the middle of the session may sometimes be comparatively quieter. Commodity traders may find the later session important because international markets are active.

It is important to differentiate between market trading and market profits. An increase in volatility would open up more trading opportunities, but would also increase the likelihood of a more rapid decline.

Important Tips Before Trading

  1. Check exchange timings: Do not rely solely on an old trading timetable.
  2. Know the instrument: Equity, F&O, currency and commodities have different schedules.
  3. Check broker square-off rules: Broker cut-off times may differ from exchange closing times.
  4. Watch contract specifications: Individual derivative contracts can have specific expiry and trading rules.
  5. Consider global events: Commodity and currency prices can react strongly to international developments.
  6. Avoid trading solely because the market is open: A longer session does not automatically mean better opportunities.

Conclusion

Knowing Indian trading hours is one of the simplest ways to improve trading discipline. The typical market hours are usually the following, Equity and NSEF&O are typically in operation from9:15Am to3:30Pm, Currency derivatives market are typically in operation from9am till 5pm whereas commodities market vary much with seasonality and the underlying product.
